2020 Recipient Andrew J Heaton
On March 4, 2020 Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park Lead Historian, Frank O’Reilly announced that he found a perfect fit for the 2020 Civil War Round Table of Fredericksburg's Albert Z. Conner internship. Andrew J. Heaton, a native of Lenaxa, Kansas, attends Oklahoma State University, where he is on the President’s List and in the university marching band. He came to the NMPS highly recommended.
Andrew initially planned on being a professional pilot—even obtaining his pilot’s license—but then had an epiphany and wanted to teach social studies and history. He is currently a senior and will graduate in the fall of 2020 with degrees in Secondary Education and History. He intends to go on to graduate school, pursuing an MA in American History. He is very articulate and has a comfortably confident rapport that will fit well with the park. According to his professors, he excels in tough situations and thrives on challenges.
Andrew returned home in mid-August after a memorable summer experience. He has a couple of weeks with his family before returning to Oklahoma State University to begin student teaching. Despite the impact of the COVID19, Andrew enjoyed his NMPS experience and was able to visit several Virginia battlefields. We wish Andrew all the best in his future endeavors.
