Well-known Rufus Dawes and lesser-known brother Ephraim each kept personal accounts of battles in which they fought. Author Steve Magnusen transcribes their actual accounts and adds background narrative. One controversy that Magnusen resolves is whether Rufus suffered from Soldiers Heart (PTSD). His conclusion is based on a series of heretofore unpublished 1864 letters to wife Mary. Ephraim’s wartime saga is also remarkable. The book includes post-war life for both brothers.
